1. Fibaro Home Center 2 / Home Center Lite – The Best Smart Home
In the next few paragraphs I am going to talk about the best Smart Home I got because last year I had my bicycle stolen from the front yard and since then I started thinking about putting an alarm system at home.
I’ve searched for information on the Internet and came to the conclusion that a classic alarm system is not for me because you have to do some serious research before installing it (pull cables, pull a sensor feeder, etc …) and my control over the alarm system would be limited.
Plus, I wanted more than a system to trigger a siren when the thief enters the house or the yard. I want to know at all times what happens, and if I can make some things automatic.
In my research discovered the home automation systems, but I did not get into that many details, so I’ve just bought the Home Center 2 from Fibaro, because it had great reviews.
Fibaro offers the ability to control and monitor your home remotely & permanently on your phone or tablet via an app, on your PC, or through an online platform.

4. A flood sensor that detects water – and this sensor has its own warning siren system;
5. A door or window sensor that can sense whether the door or window is closed or open (this sensor also has the alarm function when it is set to do so);
6. An intelligent socket that can turn on or off powering a consumer either at the command of the user (from anywhere on the internet) or automatically as a result of a user defined scenario (for example: when I set the alarm in the house=> then shuts down all the electric consumers);
Also, an interesting thing about the socket is that it also works as a repeater, meaning that it extends the network created by the central unit + indexing and memorizing the power consumption of the device connected to the socket.
Fibaro speak Z-Wave
At Fibaro Home Center 2 (or the smaller Home Control Lite control unit), other sensors from other brands of either the same type or different types, can be added, but only with sensors having Z -Wave or Z-Wave Plus features, which is not a problem as there are currently over 2000 manufacturers that include this in their standard products.
In fact, Z-Wave is a technology that emerged in 2008 and is used for smart homes and is actually a wireless communication protocol between different devices (in our case, the sensors and the base unit).
As it is, it has two great advantages over the wireless technology – you can connect it from your laptop or smartphone to your home wireless routers: uses a frequency which means there is much less interference, and needs much less power, which means it is suitable for battery-powered devices such as sensors.
There are many types of sensors that can communicate via Z-Wave, apart from those included in the Fibaro package, such as: sirens, lighting switches, interlocks that fit directly into normal outlets, dimmer for dimmable bulbs, thermostats, remote controls, smart gates that no longer require access key, and so on and so forth.
Perhaps in a few years in our homes, not only the refrigerator and washing machine will be connected to a Smart Home system, but also things you may not have thought of, such as automatic shutters, or blinds that will open at the time you schedule them according to the day of the week.
Installation of the Fibaro Home Center 2 / Lite
First we install the Fibaro Finder app compatible with Mac OS and Windows, to find the central unit in our network.
We connect the smart home hub to the socket and the wireless router, and we expect the Fibaro Finder application to detect it on the network. Then, things like user name, email, phone, and so on, have to be defined and after completing these operations we can start adding sensors to the system that is getting familiar with the central unit.
Each of the Fibaro sensors is added in the same way (except for some, but you can find the installation process in the manual of each of the products): first select “Add or remove device” from the interface, then remove the sensor battery, then press the sensor button three times, and wait a few seconds for the smart home hub to detect the sensor and record it in the system.
As a matter of fact, the above operations took about 1 hour, from connecting the main unit to the mains until the last sensor was added, which, in my opinion, is remarkable for installing such a system. Configuration is easy and that’s why we can put it in the top best smart homes.
Sensor assembly
The flood sensor and smart socket do not need to be mounted, just put them where you want them (the flood sensor is good to be put where the washer and drain are).
The motion sensor and the fire sensor can be mounted with the help of hollow screws included in the package, and the fitting only involves drilling holes in the chosen location to fix the dowels, but I do not recommend to drill; instead, use double-sided duck-tape that comes in the package of the sensors (going on the premise that it is easier to clean after the double tape than to fill the holes and then paint over it).
That’s the advantage of Z-Wave wireless technology – it does not require sensor-wired cables, and if you ask me, in my case, the batteries lasted for about 2 years.
One cool thing about this smart home device is setting different system parameters according to our presence in the house – we can be at home, temporarily leave the house, sleep at night, or leave on vacation.
Creates scenes
These four different situations are called “scenarios” and each of them can be customized for the sensors that are set, and what the system will do if one is triggered.
For example, the fire and flood sensor are armed all the time (if the flood sensor is triggered, it can shut off the washing machine socket and even from the next room to keep the water out of contact), but the movement and door / window sensors need to be set only when we are not at home. Creating scenes is a very important function in a smart home system and in the top best smart homes this function is found.

Fibaro FGK-101 is a classic sensor used in almost all security systems when opening or closing a door or window.
The sensor is based on two magnets placed side by side. One is small, a simple magnet in a white case, and the second is placed in a larger case, including the battery and z-wave communication.
